  • Wealthy Victorian's dental implants were extracted teeth from dead soldiers at the Battle of Waterloo a few decades before.
  • The Incas inlaid precious stones such as emeralds into their teeth for beautification (though anthropologists are unsure if this was done before or after death).
  • Some Vikings' filed their upper front teeth and a Sudanese tribe were known to sharpen their teeth in order to intimidate their enemies.
  • In Vietnam, traditionally baby teeth were thrown over or under the house for good luck.
  • The tomb of an ancient Egyptian dentist and his assistants was discovered in 2006. The tomb dates back to Egypt's 5th dynasty and reflects the importance dentists had in ancient Egypt.

  • The story of the tooth fairy evolved from an 18th century French fairy tale, in which a mouse changes himself into a fairy to help a good Queen defeat an evil King. The mouse/fairy hid under the King's pillow and tormented him, knocking out all of his teeth.
  • In France, La Petite Souris(the little mouse) replaces a milk tooth under the pillow with a small gift.
